BIG TROUBLEAn Evelyn Lee Emerson Novel Evelyn Lee Emerson Series Book 1 edition by Denise Jewell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Big Trouble is a fun book that I really enjoyed. However, one flaw prevents me giving it five stars.
Evelyn Lee Emerson is a member of the Isaac family. And this book is focussed on the family, particularly the women (sisters and sister-in-laws).
The Isaacs (almost all of whom are lawyers or judges) are proud of their prestigious status. They are very clannish. Some readers may be put off by the amount of boasting the family does about its importance. That would be a mistake as it is that pride that drives the story.
Another issue readers may have at the start is the number of characters. The Isaacs are a big family, and it is exactly like meeting a big family for the first time. It is difficult to take in all the names at first, but after a while, you get used to them. And again, the size of the family fits well with the story.
Evelyn is a well-drawn, believable character. She is the boss in her normal life. When events take an unprecedented turn, it is fun to watch how she and the rest of the Isaacs cope (or don’t).
The one issue I had with the book was that it needs proofreading.
Genre Mystery / Drama / Suspense
My Review

The story starts with the typical life of Evelyn Emerson who is a successful businesswoman. It soon follows into her married life and then involves all of her sisters. Due to the “tremendous” stress in their lives, they all plan to take a vacation, which eventually leads to even more stress. The entire story then goes on about how they handle this “additional stress”.

The story is pompous right from the word “go”. The family is too proud of its heritage and makes no effort to hide it at every page of the book. The women are very proud of themselves too, to a point of being arrogant. The story in itself is mildly amusing. A sense of mystery is maintained throughout the book. That manages to engage the reader throughout the book allowing them to come till the very end.
Star Rating 3 Stars
Denise Jewell has a chatty and talkative style which will please anyone who enjoys a good gossip and that is the first impression I got from Big Trouble. For me, it took a while to get into the story but once it was under way it was actually pretty hard to put down. This is the sort of story that would make a good Ealing comedy but brought right up to date. I laughed a lot as I read it. One point that I remember as particularly funny was when a character about to commit a crime took off her gloves to avoid spoiling them and consequently left her fingerprints at the scene. I know I am being vague, but I don’t want to give too much of the story away and this is pretty crucial to the plot. The book would benefit from a final edit because a couple of those mistakes that spell checks miss were present. Tony is undoubtedly a gorgeous sight, but not a gorgeous site, for instance. Nevertheless these few little errors did not spoil it for me and I loved the crazy characters, light tone and fast pace once under way.
I loved the story -- it had me saying “Oh God, this cannot possibly go well!” every few pages throughout most of it -- and the characters, especially Evelyn’s utter devotion to her family and her amusing way of putting things. Unfortunately, though, I can’t give the book five stars because there were some problems that made the book hard to read at times.

The worst problem was the punctuation. There were many missing commas and quotation marks, too many to understand some paragraphs easily.

The second biggest problem was that thoughts weren’t set off in any way, which when combined with the afore-mentioned punctuation problems sometimes made it look like the story had just suddenly switched to present tense.

And, finally, the Tennessee hills accent one character has is very wrong, and I say this with some degree of authority as I have family from that area. But the description of Tennessee mountain highways was perfect! I’ve never been on one in the snow, and I don’t think I’m brave enough to ever be.

All in all though, this was a very entertaining story with very likable characters and an amusing narrator.
Evelyn Lee Emerson may be my new hero. All she needs is a cape to achieve full-blown superhero status. LOL. I loved this book! Evelyn, as the main character and narrator, is from a wealthy, influential, Cincinnati family that prides themselves on their good reputation. She has a large family with lots of siblings and daily close interaction. All of the siblings are successful in their chosen fields which is mostly law and finance but Evelyn owns a travel agency. The more I read in the book I wondered if Evelyn's choice of career was symbolic of wanting to be different or somehow apart from her family. With so much going on, it would be hard to blame her.

The story starts out with Evelyn and her sisters planning a week long trip to a chalet in Gatlinburg, TN for skiing, shopping, relaxation, etc. What starts out as a fun-filled, relaxing week goes quickly the other way when one of Evelyn's sisters reveals she believes her husband is having an affair. What ensues after this revelation demonstrates just how crazy a woman scorned can become. I am not going to ruin the story but everything that can go wrong, goes wrong. And no matter what happens, Evelyn's sisters are looking to her to save them. Evelyn repeatedly comes up with one crazy plan after the other but it all works out in the end. I was laughing out loud throughout this book at the sisters' shenanigans. It is one of the most entertaining stories I have read in a long time. I'm looking forward to the next installment in this series so I can see what these women are gonna do next! Loved it!!!
I loved this book! I can't wait to read the next part of the series. I liked how the sisters worked together for the sake of the family. It was a page turner with the constant anticipation of what the Issac sisters will come up with next!
This is a very nice, light hearted book. A good read.
