It must be terribly difficult to be the first person to do something in your family, neighborhood, community, or among those who feel that they can judge you. Becoming an actress had to have been a difficult situation for this woman, but it was also a NEED that she had to fill. It surprises me that more women have not discussed the issues of trying to be something no one believes that they should be. But when has THAT ever stopped a woman? We surprise ourselves and others. Then we go on to blaze a way for those coming after us. Mae West, Marilyn Monroe, Lana Turner, Kathrine Hepburn or any of the other fine women who were not very well understood probably had just as much to face as this woman, but we can remember their names now. It takes one person to make the path obvious.Product details

A Woman of Genius Mary Hunter Austin 9781490953342 Books Reviews
I'm using this book as a research book to get to know Mary Austin. She was an amazing woman that was far ahead of her time. I haven't finished the book, but have very much enjoyed what I've read.
I enjoyed this book as a glimpse into culture a century and more ago. It's quite dated but still a good read, I thought anyway.
I bought this book after reading The Autobiography of William Allen White, one of the all-time great American memoirs and one you should read in its original (1946) entirety, not the recent abridged version. White knew Mary Austin well and recommended the book highly. I took his recommendation, found a cheap copy on and am glad I did. I'm only a little over halfway through now but am happy to pass on a few impressions. The title and the way the author plays with it are a tad off-putting, and the book contains some quirks of spelling and style, but overall it offers a compelling portrait of a late 19th-century woman torn between the expectations of family and community and her own journey of self-discovery. It's presented today as a feminist novel, but it's also a broader portrait of parochialism and the evolving place of art in American society. And once you get past the quirks, there's a wonderful mind at work, with lots of live thought on nearly every page.
